Exilis is used to tighten loose skin on the face, and the small studies found a visible, modest improvement that builds over a course. That is the measured answer, and the honest size of it: two uncontrolled studies, no sham-controlled Exilis trial, and a US clearance worded for wrinkles rather than tightening. What the studies measured
- Face, 30 people aged 25 to 65 (2022), the one face study that names Exilis: three weekly sessions, checked at four weeks. Every item on the scale improved, significantly only where the starting grade was the worst, for fat loss, hollows and puffiness.
- Face, arms, thighs and abdomen, 34 people (2017), a study of a combined radiofrequency and ultrasound device: four weekly treatments. Three months later, blinded evaluators picked out the after photograph in over 90% of cases, and satisfaction and comfort were rated 4.1 out of 5. Ten of the 34 were treated on the face.
- The clearance: BTL's devices are FDA-cleared in the US for the non-invasive treatment of wrinkles and for wrinkles around the eyes; the first of those clearances was granted without a clinical test.
- The maker's own figure: BTL quotes "35% improvement in skin laxity", marked data on file, with no study named.
What it does and does not do
Exilis is used to firm the skin of the cheeks, the jawline and under the chin, heating the deeper layers so that collagen contracts and rebuilds. The change is modest and gradual, and in our experience it suits early laxity and a crepey texture rather than heavy jowls, which it does not lift. People ask whether Exilis can cause fat loss in the face: no study has measured it, and the doctor goes through it with you at the consultation.
