On the face Exilis is used to tighten loose skin on the cheeks, along the jawline and under the chin, and around the eyes, where BTL's monopolar devices of the same design are cleared for periorbital wrinkles. The evidence is two small uncontrolled studies that found a visible, modest improvement building over a course of three or four weekly sessions, and we say so. Every treatment is given by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, at Exilis London, 130 Harley Street, London, W1G 7JU, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
What the studies measured
- 30 people aged 25 to 65 (2022), the one face study that names Exilis: three weekly sessions, checked at four weeks. Every item on the scale improved, significantly only where the starting grade was the worst, for fat loss, hollows and puffiness.
- 34 people (2017), a combined radiofrequency and ultrasound device: the face in ten; blinded evaluators picked out the after photograph in over 90% of cases at three months, and comfort was rated 4.1 out of 5.
- The clearances: BTL's devices are FDA-cleared in the US for the non-invasive treatment of wrinkles, the first clearance granted without a clinical test, and for wrinkles around the eyes.
What it does and does not do
Exilis is used to firm the skin, heating the deeper layers so that collagen contracts and rebuilds. The change is modest and gradual, and in our experience it suits early laxity and a crepey texture rather than heavy jowls, which it does not lift. Where lift at the brow, under the chin or on the neck is the aim, Ultherapy, which we also provide at this address, is the choice. People ask whether Exilis can cause fat loss in the face: no study has measured it, and the doctor goes through it with you at the consultation. The face question page weighs the evidence.
The session and after
In our practice gel or oil goes on the skin and a return pad on your body. The handpiece is moved over the cheeks, the jawline and under the chin while the warmth builds and is adjusted with you; about 30 minutes. Pink, warm skin afterwards that settles over hours, and no downtime. Three or four weekly sessions, as the face studies ran them, set at the consultation, then the review one to three months after the last, where we photograph in our practice.
Who it suits
In our practice, an adult with early laxity or a crepey texture on the cheeks, jawline or under the chin who wants a gentle course with no downtime. Not with a pacemaker or other internal electronic device, metal implants in the area, pregnancy or breastfeeding, an active skin infection or inflammation in the area. No published study covers Exilis over fillers or tattoos, so the doctor plans the order and the gap. The forehead, around the eyes, cheeks, jawline, under the chin and neck pages take each area on its own, the arms page and the abdomen page cover the body, and the full guide the rest.
